We also live in Canada and now have a 8k bionic Berner due to 2 ACL knee joints on her back legs. Not to mention months of long trips to special rehab vet clinics for therapy etc (underwater treadmill walking!!). But, Shady is the "perfect" dog and we couldn't imagine putting her down just because she had injured herself. (IMO, partly due to OCD genetic issues). Long story short, I would not hesitate to recommend getting your Berner on an insurance plan (like trupanion.com) and paying the premiums only for big ticket items like TPLO (knee, hip displaysia) surgeries. Believe me, we rue the day we considered the insurance for Shady and thought...."well, 40 bucks/mo is pretty expensive for a healthy puppy". Little did we know! You can always cancel the insurance at age 2, 3 or 4, if you feel you have a really healthy dog.
