Long story short, I would not hesitate to recommend getting your Berner on an insurance plan (like trupanion.com) and paying the premiums only for big ticket items like TPLO (knee, hip displaysia) surgeries. Believe me, we rue the day we considered the insurance for Shady and thought...."well, 40 bucks/mo is pretty expensive for a healthy puppy". Little did we know! You can always cancel the insurance at age 2, 3 or 4, if you feel you have a really healthy dog.

Wow, a bionic Berner. Thanks for the info. That's exactly what I am thinking about. I've researched the health of the breeding pair I am getting this puppy from but you just really never know. I'm going to look up that insurance co. To me I am willing to pay the premium but my husband is thinking along the lines you did. That's alot for a healthy puppy so I made him read your post. Thanks. I think he can see your point. Do you have just one Berner and was Shady your first?
