All the feedback I've received on when to neuter and spay on larger breed dogs has been to wait until they mature.
Our breeds take 2 full years to fully grow and mature, and I do believe that waiting can't hurt.
I think vets want to do it early before people chicken out and some breeds can get more agressive but Berners have such gentle dispositions I doubt that's an issue. My Berner is turning 2 shortly, and he'll get neutered in another month or 2 as he's still growing.
I also have a friend with a female Swissy, and her group of breeder friends have told her the same thing about waiting until they finish growing. Her vet also said to wait until her first heat cycle as their breed has had issues with females having the inability to hold urine if spayed too early. Don't know if that is a Swissy specific issue or not.
