Well, she never had a cycle before we spayed her. Both the breeders of our dogs were perfectly acceptable if we wanted to breed our dogs, once they had hips etc done at 2 years - it was our belief that breeding is best left for the experts so it was just a personal thing - we didn't want any accidents. If I could do it again, I'd wait until the dogs were at least a year, if not a bit older. Especially because we have had many troubles with poor Shady's knees which our vet said if not only genetic but possibly in part due to an early spaying. But, in speaking with owners of big dogs, they have related that big dogs rarely go through cycles earlier than 9 mo to a year. I know for sure that Leo went through a bit a puberty between 8 and 10 mo because he got quite a strong scent about him and male dogs at the dog park would get fairly agressive with him, with all his male hormones in full swing. Leo is an incredibly healthy and well built, sturdy male who hikes daily in the woods with me for nearly an hour.
