We never fed our Berner puppies "puppy" food and we've successfuly raised 3 of them to adulthood. Reason being? Puppy food is too high in protein and could cause problems as their bones grow too quickly. To feed them adult food (super high quality food) was on the advice of our breeder who has over 30 years of experience with Berners. When we went to puppy kindergarten, there were questions asked about this topic, too, and the teacher, who raises both show Poms and German Shepherds, also said that puppy kibble was not for large breed dogs and to feed a high quality dog food to the pups instead. We didn't mix any extras in until the pups were about 6 mo, then would give occasional treats such as cottage cheese, yogurt, hamburger, but not so much as to make them gain a tonne of weight. Yes, we feel badly sometimes that they don't get any (well, they get a few) "special" dinners, but they are healthy dogs and truth be told, the both of them would eat themselves to death if given the chance. Sometimes, "ya gotta be cruel to be kind".

We live in Canada, and I haven't heard of that dog food but if it is for adults dogs and a better line of dog food than what is in the supermarkets, it's probably OK. Check out the protein of the puppy food of that line and if it is quite a bit higher than the adult food, then it is better to give the adult line to your pups. We give our dogs Petcurean.com "Now!" grain free or as a change, "Go!" but really, if you are feeding a high quality adult food, I think you are OK. You just don't want to give them a high protein food when they are growing or you are looking at potential joint problems in future. Our girl Shady has 2 bionic knees on her back legs, somewhat from genetics, somewhat from walking her too much as a pup and I wouldn't wish her troubles on any other dog! But one thing I know for sure, she didn't get her troubles from the wrong dog food in her puppy-hood.

We were told to stick to a food with a protein less
than 28%. When he was on the puppy food it was 26% now the adult food is 25%. I want to do a grain free food! We were told to wait until he's 1! He's a great dog and we are so happy with him! |
