Old Lamb vs Lamb & Rice
Junior Member
My wife bought a Bernese Mountain Dog and I'm trying to figure out the best dry dog food for him.

We had started off with three 30lb bags of Eukanuba Lamb & Rice, and that actually worked very well. The brown fur around his feet, which had started out looking frankly unattractive and like dirt, has turned a shining copper. We saw something similar with a cat a decade ago, which the cat breeder confirmed, "yup, lamb & rice makes for a shiny coat, but then you have to deal with the runs". Our Bernese Mountain Dog exhibited no such symptoms, and so the Eukanuba Lamb & Rice seemed perfect.

Why mess with a good thing? Well, just the hearsay that Eukanuba is mass-produced and doesn't have the best ingredients. So just yesterday I switched to Taste of the Wild Lamb. No fillers and no grains, but it also means no rice. And it's a couple dollars cheaper per 30 lb bag to boot. And to buy it I get to patronize the local groomer's shop instead of the pet superstore.

I'm just wondering if I'm going to end up giving up some coat shininess by switching to lamb instead of lamb & rice.

I used to use Natural Balance Lamb and Rice before I switched because stools were to soft. I switched to a fish blend.

On another note. I have like 60 pounds of unopened lamb if someone lives near Lancaster and wants it
