We've been feeding our Berner Wellness's Large Breed Puppy Food since we got him around 3 months old. It is supposed to promote slower growth for large breeds and the recommended feeding portions are shown for dogs as old as 16-24 months. The analysis shows: Calcuim: 1-1.4%, Crude Fat 12-13.5%, Crude Protein 26%.
I've read in a couple places that I could be feeding Bear large breed puppy food until around 15-18 months, which is the point that he should be (for the most part) fully grown. We're going to switch him to Wellness' Large Breed Adult dog food so there isn't much change. The analysis shows: Calcuim: 1.2%, Crude Fat 11%, Crude Protein 25%. Bear is 7 months now and about 60 pounds. We are expecting him to only be about 100 pounds at full size. Any advice on when to make the switch or does it even matter? |

I was talking to my vet about this when we went in last week for final shots.
He was saying that the reason they used to recommend that large breeds switched to adult food sooner than smaller pups was because there was too much protein in the puppy foods. With specialized large breed puppy food becoming more available, the need to switch isn't as pressing, because the nutritional breakdown is roughly the same (as is the case with the Wellness, clearly). |
