Old What to Feed???

Hi all,

We got our Berner, Bailey 2 months ago. She is now just over 4 mos old and we have switched her over to adult food.

The problem is, she has had terrible diarhea/loose stool for over a week. Many people/pet stores I've been to say its the food.

She is now, recommended by breeder, on 2:1 ratio of California Natural and Origin (high protein). We've been told the Origin is just too much protein and possibly the cause of her diarhea.

What is everyone else feeding their BMD??? Do you also have a regular grain free food with a high-protein food mix??

For those in Ontario, what brands are you feeding yours (I'm assuming they're different from the US)

Thanks so much for your replies.

Soph & Bailey

We had the same problem, no foods made a difference really. We feed her "GO' Canadian made and a high grade food. We were thinking of origin but it's high protein and for more active dogs.
Try adding 2 tsps of metamucil to her food twice a day. We did this and it has completely stopped the problem! Sounds strange I know, but we stopped it and the problem returned. It pulls excess water from their stool. Worked wonders for us so I'd suggest giving it a try!

For the Metamucil, do you just add it dry to the food, or do you mix it with the water like it says on the bottle?

Oh my, Origin was BRUTAL for Hugo. Same thing you are experiencing. He started with the runs at about 3 months and honestly it didn't stop. We tried so many foods and so many different remedies...now two years later, he's on raw and is incredibly successful. If you are considering raw (not sure if you are - I know a lot of people are squimish about it) puppies will transition very well.

If you are looking at decent kibble, we tried GO, NOW, Origins, and ended up choosing Mulligan's Stew - it was very sensitive on his tummy and it didn't have a lot of ingredients in it. I think Mulligan's Stew comes from Oregon? My breeder and my vet said that a lot of times what happens is that the processing of the food is outprocessing what the dog can process...almost like it is so far advanced that their bodies don't know what to do with it so they just 'get rid of it.' Makes sense really when you think of it!

Would love to hear if you are having success! Also, try probiotics and digestive enzymes (just buy them at the health food store - they are the same at the vet and WAY more expensive there as opposed to at the health food store). That also helped us too!

I just sprinkle it right onto her dry food, some gets left in the bowl stuck to the bottom sometimes but I don't worry about it. I remember we noticed a difference shortly like 3-5 days. Hopefully it works for you too! A cheap and easy solution it it does

I meant to say too my vet is working with a Berner breeder right now and said she has the happiest, healthiest dogs but same thing, sometimes it's just like WATER! Seems to be a common thing!

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

We took her off the origin and started her on Natural Balance (used to **** Van Patten), sweet potato and bison. Although her stool isn't perfect its much better now. At least you can almost pick it up. lol

Id love to do the raw diet but it seems so expensive! Do you buy it or do it yourself?

I do however find that the longer she waits before poops the more solid it gets. Like first thing in the morning, they're great. We may try the metamucil and see what happens.

Our vet also recommended putting some canned pumpkin into her food because its fibrous. Not the pie filling type though as someone mentioned.

Hi Soph & Bailey,
After months of runny stools from my Berner I switched to a raw diet and was lucky enough to have a good mentor to help me. His stools firmed up in two days and have never come back. He is now 19 months and looks wonderful. His coat is glorious and his teeth look wonderful. I realize this is not for everyone but it sure helped him and he loves it. I also switched my older shepard and he is doing so well. His teeth look wonderful or a 11 year old dog. Another thing you can try if you stick to kibble is canned pumpkin. Not the mix but plain pumpkin. I'll give a couple of spoonfuls after each meal and it really does help for either constipation or loose stools. Good luck

Dogs delight to eat bully sticks (it's a sort of a dog treats) But I'm not sure about homemade treats, Does anyone knows about this?

Hi there we are using Inova large breed puppy food from Petsmart a d we also have a 4month old but we were told not to. Our vet said not switch to adult food until he is almost 1 year old and the we will switch to Innoca adult food for large breed. When you read the label it has all the good stuff in it.
