We have lways had pet insurance and each time been grateful that we did.

Our Max not a Bernese he was an Aussie shepherdx rottie developed cancer at 4 and we were able to give him a good pallative care plan till the time came when we needed to say goodbye. Without insurance that would not of been possible. It allowed the vet to do the necessary tests to confirm his fears. That will be 10 years ago this year and then cost the insurers £1000. Minus excess which if I remember was £45 for all the treatment.

Ollie our Bernese who we lost in Feb 2011 was also insured thank goodness and again at roughly 4 we had problems with him and again the insurance allowed him to be hospitalised and for all necessary tests to be carried out unfortunatley it was not till PM that we discovered his problems but again wihtout insurance we would never of been able to of gone ahead with his care even if for only a couple of months. His bill totalled £4,200 and we picked up the excess of £80. That was for roughly 2 months of tests hospitalisation and some drugs.

Dillon is insurd at the moment with the insurance from his breeder for 4 weeks. In the sales contract we had to sign and agree we would carry on with insurance. So I am at this time researching for maximum cover and lifetime policy.

Obviouslymedical bills can be an issue whether you have one or two.

I think as long as you are AWARE up front of how expensive everyday costs can be you should be fine. We have a regular vet that does the well check ups and any sick visitsand use clinics for extra vaccinations .
Our dog food is $50 every three weeks so that means $100 everythree weeks for 2 dogs( when the new pup starts eating like an adult). We pay for grooming at $70 every 6 weeks. This now means $150 every 6 weeks once the pup get too big to do ourselves . Of course I CAN do the dogs ourselves with grooming but after several adventures with wet and hair on our ceilings and walls we gladly pay for grooming once they hit the adult size.

Ithink the biggest thing I can say is if you have to cut back QUALITY to get a second dog then stay with ONE. we just got our second and definately weighed the the pros and cons of if we were prepared to DOUBLE the quality we gave our first.
