Old Annual Vacination Booster due

Hi Guys,

Fynn's first Annual Vacination booster is due and up untill now I had never questioned having these done, but after reading a few posts on here it has started me thinking!
So I have tried to do as much resurch as I can but I am still very confused
I have read that some recommend that you get their first annual booster and then test for antibodies the year after? and some just recomend testing first without vacinating at all.

I would welcome anyones views/help on this one please as i would like as much information as I can lay my hands on to present to my Vet as I am sure he is going to recommend still having yearly boosters, which I am now almost positive is not necassary for any Dog!

When Dillon went last week for his puppy vaccinatios I discussed this with his vet. I was happy to realise our vets now only booster every 3 years although they do booster every year for Lepto apparently unlike Distemper and Parvo it is rife especially in our area.

She did say they are reading up on the 5 year vaccination recommendation but are not confident enough yet with the reading they have done so far to incorporate it into their practice. She is happy to discuss with me next year the Lepto vaccination and fully understands if I decide to only puppy booster Dillon due to the delicate nature of the immune system of the Bernese.

We changed our vet just before Ollie was ill and thank goodness we did. They are a little out of the way practice and not in it to make money like some of the commercial practices and have time and are willing to discuss options.

Are you a member of the natural Berner site on yahoo ?

Here is the link if you are not and you would like to take a look.

Do you all give the DHLLP, including the Lepto? I have always been advised to leave it out of the vaccine due to bad reactions.

Hi, I understand your confusion. It seems there are so many opinions. I gave both of mine their puppy series . I did not do lepto. To afraid. I have heard to many bad things and it's not that much of a issue in Maryland where I am. Then at 1 year from his rabies shot he got a 3 yr rabies. I am now going to titer the next time he is due for anything the vet recommends. I don't believe you can get away without doing rabies and I am actually glad I did because just the other day my 3 dogs caught and killed a racoon. I had the racoon tested for rabies and am now waiting for the results. Thank goodness mine were up to date on that. Anyway, I don't do kennel cough, lymes or lepto. The vet is not happy about me not doing lymes but Berners are very sensitive. I treat with herbal sprays and feed garlic I get from Sprintime Inc. and I figure I will just test for it regulary and treat if it was ever positive. I do treat for heartworms . I have since learned that I could have titered also for that first annual booster but I didn't. If your vet is ok with that I would do that. You may have to request it. My vet is not to keen on it but that's what I am going to do next time. Anyway, didn't mean to go on so. Just food for thought. Good luck, Katie

I did the requisite puppy series shots with Axel....Distemper, Parvo. Skipped kennel cough and the others. The way I see it is, you dont jam your kids full of poison every 12 months, why our dogs? I truly see it as a way vets simply get you in the door yearly so they can make a living. There has been research that the immunity may last a lifetime (sadly, particularly with our short lived Berners)

Why even go into the vet really unless you need to. We only take our children to the doctor when they are sick right?
