Hi there. Our 17 week old Berner puppy Ollie has had bouts of diarrhoea for the last few weeks. We've had him at the vets on 3 occasions now and the vet still can't seem to find out what's causing it. We're beginning to get a bit concerned as it's been going on a while now. He seems quite well, hasn't had any vomiting, is eating fine and is full of energy - the only symptom is diarrhoea which he gets for a few days at a time. The vet has tried a course of antibiotics and we've had Ollie regularly wormed with Drontal so its not worms. On our last visit to the vet he put Ollie on Hills prescription diet for a week and so far so good - no diarrhoea at the moment. We normally feed Ollie on Eukanuba Puppy (dry) but are thinking of trying something else. Just wondered if any of you had problems with your Bernese having a sensitive stomach (assuming that's what it is) and if it was a common problem with the breed? This is our second Berner and our previous dog had no problems with this at all. Before that I had German Shepherds who often seem to have very sensitive stomachs. We're thinking of trying another dry puppy food - possibly a hypoallergenic on and are looking into a few different brands (we live in the UK). Any advice on this would be welcome, thanks! My girl had similar problems when she was a puppy. After numerous trips to the vets, she was finally diagnosed with campylobacter. I was advised that ordinary antibiotics, such as metronidazole only mask an improvement, so a course of erythromycin was prescribed which finally cured her. Might be worth asking your vet to send a sample off to a lab requesting a campylobacter test. Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for your reply. It certainly does seem to be a common problem with Berner pups! We didn't have this trouble with our first Berner pup so I wasn't aware of it till we got Ollie. Ollie is now 19 months old and huge! We eventually found that Burns Chicken and Brown Rice suited him best and both of our Bernese are on this now as they are both prone to diarrhoea. I also give them Burns Kelties for treats. I think it's just a case of finding the right food to suit your dog - what suits one might not suit another. It took us a long time to get there and we were just worried there was an underlying problem that was causing the diarrhoea. The only time Ollie gets diarrhoea now is if he eats something he finds when we're out walking in the woods (he's the worlds worst for this!). Hope that Pudding gets over his diarrhoea - sounds like you're doing all the right things anyway. You'll probably find things improve as he gets a bit older. Hi all, After many trips to the vets with my berner who also had diarrhoea my friend who is a expert in raw feeding got me to switch off kibble and onto a raw diet. He was 4 months at the time. Now 71/2 months. Diarrhoea was gone in 3 days and hasn't had it since. He looks and feels great and just loves his food. |

Zinc supplements or foods rich in zinc are best at treating diarrhea. They're also best at treating and preventing pneumonia on humans.
