Hey,
My bernese is just coming up to 2 years old. A couple of months ago
He started with this reverse sneezing/snorting mainly when he's resting.
I took him to vets and they said maybe an elongated soft palate, which could be corrected with surgery. But if its not bothering him too much he should be ok (hes eating fine, always greedy!) .
They put him on a course of antibiotics for a week, and it did seem to calm it down but now they have finished and has come back more again. He seems to be eating really slowly too, as if he has a sore throat. (the vet checked for lumps and bumps and found nothing, and his heart and lungs were perfect.)
Now wondering whether to take him back to vets or not.
Did your friends bernese get sorted, or is it still going on?
Thanks, bexe

Hi Bexe,

her vet told her that her Boy has Laryngeal paralysis and has given her the choice of an opperation but it only has a 50/50 % chance of working but if she leaves it it could get progressivley worse and she could loose him anyway..hard choice to make eh she has untill next tuesday to make her mind up.

she finds him worse in the heat or after some sort of exersion do you find this is the case with your Dog?I think X-rays/scans are the only way to diagnoise this correctly so maybe you should take him back to the Vet if you are worried.Do you have good insurance??

I'm not familiar with the treatment but I think it needs surgery. I think it's necessary to go to the vet to have a look because it's already affecting the respiratory system of the dog.

Hey,
Just wondering what happened to ur friends dog?
We sadly had our yoshi put to sleep last Wednesday.
He hadn't been well for over a month (stopped eating, sickness,
Dioherrea, lethargy) and after some operations and stays at the vet
He was beginning to suffer.they diagnosed systemic histiocytosis, and had him on steroids but unfortunately they didn't seem to work. .he was only 2years 2 month old

Hi, so sorry to hear about your friend's dog having this condition.

Our last Bernese developed this when he was 9. One day when I was out walking him, he started having breathing problems like he was gasping for breath, horrendous to watch - like he had something stuck in his throat. I got him to the vets straight away and they diagnosed laryngeal paralysis from an x-ray.

We opted not to go for surgery because of his age and his other health problems but if he'd been a young dog I would definitely have tried the surgery I think.

Not sure how old your friend's dog is but our vet gave us higher statistics than 50/50 for success rate of surgery so it might be worth your friend getting a second opinion - still a very hard decision to make though.
