Old intermittent limping

We have a four and a half month old male Berner. He's the sweetest most lovable dog we've ever had. About two weeks ago I noticed he was limping on his left back leg, especially when he got up from lying down. I took him to the vet, who examined him, had him walk etc. Vet said it wasn't panosteitis and that he was fine. For the past couple of weeks he has been fine; no limping and walking normally until this morning. When he got up he just held his left rear leg up and didn't seem to want to put any weight on it. He has been limping when he walks and it's worse after lying down and getting up. I don't want to rush off to the vet again and just plan to let him rest. Has anyone else had a similar situation with their dog? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Gloria, yes I have had that problem with Fynn he first started to limp on his front legs then his back at around 4 months the vet was worried and thought it was a problem with his hips any way I did a bit of 'goodling' and was confinced it was'nt,after blood tests and x-rays he was diagnosed with panosteitis he is still suffering off and on he is now 7 months, rest will help him but if you think he is getting worse or showing other symptoms I would get him back to the vet quick.

Thanks for taking the time to respond Rowan. He has been to see an orthopedic vet for x-rays of his hips. His hips are fine. He also had a problem about as month ago with a limp on one of his front legs which resolved itself with no treatment. I'm going to see how he is in the morning and if he's still limping I'll take him to see the vet.

Hi Gloria, maybe you could ask the v.et to check his temrature as 'pano' can cause them to pant a lot due to the infection and/or pain.

Good luck will you keep us posted to how he is gettimn on please.

We just got back from the Orthopedic vet. Dylan has a soft tissue knee injury. He'll be on pain medication and resting for the next few weeks. If he's up to it he can have short walks on a leash.

He's made a rapid recovery (it's amazing what the right medication can do) and is very frisky. You're so right about getting him to rest. As soon as he's outside, he wants to run around.

Hi Gloria,
I noticed your post about limping. We also had this same problem with our girl. When she was around 5 months old I came home from work one day and she was howling from pain in her front right and wouldn't put any weight on that side at all. I thought she had injured herself but this seemed unlikely since she had been crated. I checked her up and down for a wound of some kind. I put pressure on her legs to see if she maybe had a bruise somewhere. Nothing. Immediately we notified the breeder. She told us not to worry to much as a lot of large breed dogs end up with growing pains (pano). Since our girl is going to be used in a breeding program we had to be sure that it wasn't some kind of dysplasia and since it was to be done anyway, we took her to the vet to have her tested. She came out negative for dysplasia and the vet confirmed that it was simply aching joints from growing so quickly just as we suspected.
From reading some of the replies to your original post - it seems this is even more common than I thought. Hope your little guy feels better soon

A few months ago, Dylan was limping on his right front leg. I took him to the vet and he thought it was pano. We also had his hips checked by an orthopedic vet. His hips are fine and the pano resolved itself. Glad to hear your girl was negative for displasia also and that the pano went away.

I realize now how common pano is among large breed dogs. That's the beauty of this forum where members can share information and similar experiences.

I think a trip to the vet is necessary because the condition might get worse. Go to another vet for second opinions if you have second thoughts with your vet.
