Ok, My Paige was Dx with lymes at 4 months. Did the Doxy. She occasionally limps with the right front paw. She is 10 months now. As far as vaccines go...What would you do for your child. If you vaccinate your child , vaccinate your dog. She is your child. She just doesn't speak with words. Lynn Q |

My five month old puppy was just diagnosed with Lyme Disease and put on Doxycycline for a month. My vet recommended that after the medication is finished he should get the Lyme vaccination. From talking to my breeder and investigating on my own, I realize that this vaccine is controversial. I'm torn because we live in a high tick area. Has anyone else faced a similar situation? Any feedback would be much appreciated.
I also think the vaccination is controversial because if the dog is already diagnosed with Lyme disease then the vaccine has no more effect because the dog already acquired passive immunity of the disease by acquiring it.

My vet says that a dog can get reinfected with Lyme. I also read this while researching the disease. |

Yes a dog can get reinfected with Lymes disease as can humans. Thats why people have to be very careful everytime they go into ares known to be tick infested. The reaction to the disease can be as severe or worse than the previous infection if not treated....... Information from the CDC Can a person be reinfected with Lyme disease? (Lyme Disease Lyme Disease ) (The link to the site is in Green) A. Yes. Having had Lyme disease doesn't protect against reinfection. Some persons have had Lyme disease more than once after re-exposure to infective tick bites. This stresses the need for continued tick bite prevention activities such as wearing appropriate clothing when in tick-infested areas, daily tick checks, and quick removal of attached ticks. My Paige is doing fine now but once she was done with the original treatment I vaccinated her. She is 15 months now. Hope this helps. |
