My five month old puppy was just diagnosed with Lyme Disease and put on Doxycycline for a month. My vet recommended that after the medication is finished he should get the Lyme vaccination. From talking to my breeder and investigating on my own, I realize that this vaccine is controversial. I'm torn because we live in a high tick area. Has anyone else faced a similar situation? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

I was debating on getting it too for our puppy, but our vet started the vaccine on his first visit! He was very adamant on giving it because it is so big around here (Vermont). Where do you live?

I live in a town in Massachusetts. There are lots of woods around my house and lots of deer. Have you seen any side affects from the vaccine? |

No we haven't had any problems. In fact, we just got home from the vet's office and he got the second series of the lyme shot. So far, no problems. It's not a guarantee against the disease and you have to get it done yearly.

Easchaars, how old is your puppy?
Rowan, Dylan had a lameness in his back legs for three days and then he was fine. His breeder mentioned that it could be Panosteitis or it could be Lyme. I took him to the vet for a blood test which came back positive for Lyme. Apparently, the sort of lameness he had can be one symptom of the disease. |

Riley had a false positive test for lyme when he was about 3 or 4 months old. He was also put on Doxycycline for 30 days. Because of some other issues... we had him re-tested only to find out that he didn't have Lyme Disease but instead had an auto immune disorder. Because of this we ONLY get rabies vaccines now. Don't get me wrong....Vaccines save our animals from so many diseases. I just think you need to do your research and get as much information as you can before you make our decision.

I live in NH where ticks are abundant. Our vet vaccinated Truman with the Lyme vaccine when he was 4.5 months. Vaccines in humans and animals are always controversial, but I believe my vet wants the very best for my 4-legged kiddos and wouldn't recommend anything that would harm them (intentionally anyway). Knock on wood, Truman has handled all of his vaccine's really well. |
