Old Hair loss around muzzle
Junior Member
Hi everybody,
I am the proud new mom to an 11wk old berner. He is just awesome, and frankly the smartest puppy to ever walk the earth if you ask me
However, last Thursday I noticed he had a small, <1cm, patch of hair missing under his eye. I brought him to the vet on Saturday. She did a skin scrape to check for Demodex and checked him thoroughly for any parasites, no sign of either. The vet said to wait and see.
Well, by Monday morning nearly all the white hair from his little muzzle was gone
I brought him straight back to the vet, more skin scrapes, negative results.
She feels it is an allergy, probably to his shampoo. So she gave me Douxo shampoo and spray for him, which we've started using. I thought it may be food related, he eats Merrick Puppy plate, but the vet said he is too young to be displaying food allergy symptoms?! He chews on bully sticks as a treat too.
The thing is his skin is perfect, no flaking or redness.
He isn't scratching and he is in great form running around as if nothing is wrong.
I'd greatly appreciate it anyone has any idea what could be causing this, I really am at my wits end.
Thanks so much

Hmm not sure?
The only thing I've heard dogs losing fur from other than mange has been a dog who swam a lot and was allergic to something in the water?
Maybe try a different food and see what happens. A friend of mine had to switch foods and she found out it was beet root pulp? and I guess it's a common allergy and in a lot of foods.
Good luck!

HI there welcome and congratulations on your new Berner baby.

I had a similar problem with Fynn when he was about that age but his bald patches were around his eye's,he did not scratch them and they did'nd seem to cause him any problems,my Vet told us that sometimes they pick up skin mites from their Mother when they are born , all Dogs have these on their skin just some Puppies take a little longer than others to build up a ressistance to them, after a while they did clear up on their own and we have had no problems since.
Hope this helps a little, but I know how hard it is trying not to worry when they are so little

And I must disagree with you as My Fynn is the Smartest

The same thing happened to Winston with losing hair around his eyes. They did some scrapes and stuff and found out he had some sort of Mange that was acting up because his immune system wasnt up to par. After a special shampoo and some meds it got better and eventually grew back but i am always checking on it. Good luck!

These days hair fall is common and it is bad for your personality, because hairs are your best personality. For hair fall coconut oil and silica is best.

Hi, Quigley

Hair loss can mean impaired growth of new hair. It may involve the entire coat, or you may see patches of hair loss on certain parts of the body. In general, hair loss caused by hormonal diseases is symmetric (the same on both sides of the body), while that caused by parasites and other causes is asymmetric.

All the best,
C
