I think the vet was quite surprised that he had this. He was almost certain that Miles had meningitis that wasn't caught on the first spinal tap. He said that it is not genetic - dogs with weakened or immature (puppies) immune systems can get this from bacteria or fungus that is just in the house or yard etc. I don't think there was anything we could have done to prevent it. We are getting additional tests done to try to find out the exact cause of the infection (bacterial or fungal) so we can treat it more effectively.
Miles has been like a new dog since his tests - bouncing off the walls and filled with energy and happiness - so I hope he is getting better (though I think it is not possible that the antibiotics could have worked that fast)!

I am sorry to hear Miles has a condition but happy you now know what you are dealing with and it is able to be treated.

I wish Miles and yourself a lot more happy years together.

Hi everyone ..I'm new to forum but so delighted to find it..I have a 5yr old berner..She had same problems as miles at 9 months and got better on antiboitics also...But then at 15 months she started to stiffen again yelping when she was getting up or lying down holding head down and only moving her eyes instead of her head ..it ended up she had steroid responsive meningitis...Like the other dogs she responded quickly and made full recovery..But she has had a few relapses....What i want to ask is.. does anyone think that the meningitis changed their dogs temprerment..Heidi was a real peoples dog loved everybody ....But now she's nervous of strangers and i don't fully thrust her with people..Love to hear other feedbacks

I don't "think" it changed Rileys temperament..... But he never had a relapse either. He was on pred for about 18 months and we have been very lucky so far. He recently tore his ACL and I worry that the stress from all of this could cause a relapse.
