We've noticed that Jasper has recently been opting to drink out of puddles or eat snow rather than drink from his own bowls. We have a large bowl outside and a large bowl inside. We often change the water to ensure it is not stale. He asks to go out, smells the water and then goes elsewhere to get hydrated. We don't know what to do with this and I was wondering if anyone else had similar problems. You cannot force a dog to drink water. I thought a new thread would help those looking for this issue. He is clearly showing you that the water you are providing is not ok for him - trust him. So lets start with changing the source of the water, the reservoir for the water AND the location of the water reservoir....and then see if he trusts it then. Many dogs, especially Berners do not like stainless steel bowls - they reflect back at them, produce and electrical charge and cause sensitivity - mine won't drink from these. Plastic or polyurethane is a big no-no and should never be used for bowls or any kind. Plastics leach into water and cause toxicity. The best water bowl as a result is a lead free ceramic bowl that is NOT made in china. I buy handmade bowls of this sort. Second, always provide filtered clean water. Tap water is not fit for any living creature. Buy a Brita or Zero pitcher if needed as this is better than nothing. Especially if your dog is showing a high level of potential toxicity via seizures, water must be PURE. Third, water should always be changed daily and fresh for them as we would require for ourselves. Standing water - especially if left outside can harbor bacteria and especially if you have this in plastic or other leaching material - all the more important. Finally, try moving the locations of these bowls...even if temporarily to get him mentally open to the new, fresh clean water. Just as an aside, I can share that my dogs always prefer running water over still and therefore rarely drink out of their bowl, and rather wait for our daily hikes and then know they will get water directly from a bottle from me - they prefer to lap this up in this manner. Good luck! |

Well, just realize that flouride is a heavy mineral not required on any level and not intended for oral consumption. Small trace levels have been deemed safe (as far as toothpaste and teeth cleanings go) but there are no studies that suggest regular, constant, oral consumption is safe.
While many countries have been removing flouride from their water, only the U.S. and Canada saw fit to ADD it to the water. Go figure. So small children and pets are consuming the same amount deemed "viable" for a large adult man. And studies have now shown its connection to cancer - namely bone cancer and breast cancer if you google it. Not something I am looking to consume or have my pets consume personally. Rachel |

Vecinu,
I'm from south western Ontario! We used the Brita filter for our dogs. There is a fresh water spring near us, which is drinkable but I am apprehensive to give it to our pup even though many residents drink from it and is checked weekly with results posted. Anywho I'm curious-- where did you adopt Jasper from? |
