I have my dogs with NFU as i also have a horse insured with them.
I had a horse vet bill in the summer for £1600 which was settled within 2 weeks Im sure the dog side of things will also be good. Most of the horse owners are with them and also have dogs, i have only heard good reports of them paying without weeks of arguement.I think i pay around £30 per month for my bernie, all covered with no exclusions, i cant see the point of having an insurance without covering hips, elbows etc. 1st bernie had hip dysplasia 2nd bernie had ocd in the shoulder (died of cancer at 9 years!) Karen Karen, Thats good to know about NFU. I am in the USA in Maryland and not sure if it is offered where I am. I'll check. It does seem silly to get the insurance if their are exclusions esp to hip and elbow dysplasia and different cancers. Sorry about your Berner. Was there anything you could do him or her? I must be nuts to want to own a dog that may not live much older than 9 if your lucky. I just had to put my husky cross down. He was 13 and one day. I also have a English Shepherd who is 9. I think I have done my research on this puppy but you just never know. Katie |

Hello
My family & I are also looking into getting insurance for our 9 month-old Heidi for the "just in case" stuff. We live in Canada, so any fellow Canucks have opinions on insurance plans you have? Thanks a bunch! |

Hi, Serveral people have mentioned NFU to me but I can't get that here in Maryland USA. Not sure about where you are at. I'm still looking and have found that most of the insurance premiums that cover pretty much everything without excursions is pretty pricey, but then again it only takes one big expense to set you back. I'm still trying to decide. Good luck. |

We also live in Canada and now have a 8k bionic Berner due to 2 ACL knee joints on her back legs. Not to mention months of long trips to special rehab vet clinics for therapy etc (underwater treadmill walking!!). But, Shady is the "perfect" dog and we couldn't imagine putting her down just because she had injured herself. (IMO, partly due to OCD genetic issues). Long story short, I would not hesitate to recommend getting your Berner on an insurance plan (like trupanion.com) and paying the premiums only for big ticket items like TPLO (knee, hip displaysia) surgeries. Believe me, we rue the day we considered the insurance for Shady and thought...."well, 40 bucks/mo is pretty expensive for a healthy puppy". Little did we know! You can always cancel the insurance at age 2, 3 or 4, if you feel you have a really healthy dog.

Wow, a bionic Berner. Thanks for the info. That's exactly what I am thinking about. I've researched the health of the breeding pair I am getting this puppy from but you just really never know. I'm going to look up that insurance co. To me I am willing to pay the premium but my husband is thinking along the lines you did. That's alot for a healthy puppy so I made him read your post. Thanks. I think he can see your point. Do you have just one Berner and was Shady your first? |

I too have a bionic Berner. Stormy was 6 months when he had elbow surgery on both elbows. I too don't regret ever doing the surgery or the countless injections, or vet trips. I did do my own therapy though, lucky to have a lake to do it in. I thought the same $40 bucks, wow, i can save the money up when the dysplasia hits, guess what? it hits before they are a year. get insurance for at least 2 years, it will more then pay for it self if something happens. I couldn't imagine not getting the surgery for stormy, now i have to pay a lot more then insurance premium. |

I was just thinking myself, I'll just put the money aside each month into a savings account but lets be realistic. I'm not very good a doing that. I quess I might go to the vet I'll be using and ask them for some prices on surgery and what their thoughts are on the subject. I've never had insurance on my other pets and have gotten by ok . Man, this is hard because they all have different options and little differences in the plans. Still more research to be done I quess. Thanks ![]() |

We too are having some difficulties deciding. The whole setting up a savings account was the way were going to go, but there's still such a big part of me that's worried about the "what if" for large surgeries and stuff. Like you, I guess ongoing research is still very much required. Does anyone have opinions or experience with plans that cover everything (such as normal vet visits/vaccinations/ etc) versus only accidents/injuries/disease plans. I realize the premiums and deductables differ, but how much do you really save if you have a healthy dog. I have been quoted between $30-$80 a month which can be $780 a year max. Plus, Berners are more expensive for plans correct? Any opinions are greatly appreciated ![]() |

We also have a male Berner that we insured for the first 2 years. The insurance we took out only covered him for major surgeries/treatments that cost over $500. We since cancelled the insurance (they just raised the rate to $50/mo) because we are certain we have a superbly healthy boy. He has a gorgeous strong build, very different from Shady who has very long legs and a tall build. Leo is short and sturdy and has a beautiful gait when walking. I think insurance is very good for the first 2 or 3 years (I wouldn't even put it on until the pup was about 9 mo) but if your dog is sturdy and strong, I personally think insurance is a waste of money.
