Old Ollie's Hip Replacement Journey

Hi, just wanted to share our dog Ollie's story with you. He's our 3 year old Berner who was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia about a year ago. After 3 or 4 months, despite being on medication, he was struggling to walk for even 5 minutes he was in so much pain.

Ollie underwent a total hip replacement on his left hip last September and then had to have his right hip replaced in December. The Orthopaedic Surgeon who did both operations was absolutely fantastic (John Ferguson based in Fife in Scotland) and both operations have been very successful.

After many months of recuperation and rest both hips have healed beautifuly and Ollie has finally been given the all clear! The other day he got off the lead for the first time in months and he had a great time running on the beach and swimming in the sea!

Thought you might like to see some photos of him during his recovery and afterwards enjoying his new freedom and pain free life!

It's been a difficult journey for Ollie and has been pretty stressful for us but it's so worth it when you see the end result.

Lovely to see Ollie has done so well and can now enjoy running about.

Unfortunatley my Ollie was not so lucky but his problems were so much more complicated.

This is an AWESOME story. Thank you for sharing. Ollie is a lucky boy to have a wonderful family to see him through all of this. I am sure it has been stressful for everyone ! It is always so hard when our "babies" are sick or don't feel well. Tell Ollie we are all glad he is on the mend !

Thanks for all your lovely replies! Ollie is going from strength to strength and when he's out for his walks now his tail is permanently wagging! It's so fantastic that he's pain free at last and it seems nothing short of a miracle that he can run around now and go for long walks. It was so heartbreaking to see him in so much pain before he had the surgery but he's like a new dog now.

Having both hip replacements within 3 months of each other was a lot to put Ollie through and the after care was pretty intense but hey it's been so worth it - just seeing him so happy and pain free means the world to us. Hopefully he'll have many happy years ahead to enjoy life.
