We have a boy and a girl Berner. We spayed our girl at 6 mo and neutered our boy at 11 mo. We waited until we saw Leo 'lift his leg' to pee, but strangely enough, he rarely does this anyways, for the most part, he squats like a girl. When we had Shady in to a specialist on another matter, he mentioned about her longish legs and tall build and said there was new research that indicates it is better to wait to spay & neuter until a year or even longer, once the dogs have developed more fully into their adult selves. So, I guess the best answer is to not listen to anyone, but do your research and follow your instincts. I think, while females can have their first heat at 6 mo, usually Berners are older, just because they are so much slower to mature. I also think that most breeders are ever so much more knowledgable about the breed itself and it does kind of make sense to me that the dogs should be mostly grown before we intervene.
On another note, it is our Queen of the Castle Shady who puts Leo in his place, by mounting and humping him, not every day, but when he gets too cocky with her. I've only seen Leo do this to one other dog and he was already neutered. He finally met a dog that was less submissive than him and decided to try to be the boss for a change. I think dogs will always work out the social hierarchy on their own but older dogs usually give quite a bit of leeway to pups. |

Ollie was neutered at 6 months he is a big dog, and still marks and mostly lifts his leg very rarely squats.
I sometimes wish I had waited now till he was older he is very shy of some people and is very interested in girl dogs if in heat but manaageable, not sure how he would be if not neutered, our previous dog who was not a Berner was neutered at 17 moths old and very people friendly, not sure if Ollie's problem is because we had him neutered too young or if he would of been this way anyway. |

All the feedback I've received on when to neuter and spay on larger breed dogs has been to wait until they mature.
Our breeds take 2 full years to fully grow and mature, and I do believe that waiting can't hurt. I think vets want to do it early before people chicken out and some breeds can get more agressive but Berners have such gentle dispositions I doubt that's an issue. My Berner is turning 2 shortly, and he'll get neutered in another month or 2 as he's still growing. I also have a friend with a female Swissy, and her group of breeder friends have told her the same thing about waiting until they finish growing. Her vet also said to wait until her first heat cycle as their breed has had issues with females having the inability to hold urine if spayed too early. Don't know if that is a Swissy specific issue or not. Gail |

Hello, I was wondering if you could tell me when your girl got her first cycle? I am a little confused as i have heard everything from 6 mos to 1 year...

Well, she never had a cycle before we spayed her. Both the breeders of our dogs were perfectly acceptable if we wanted to breed our dogs, once they had hips etc done at 2 years - it was our belief that breeding is best left for the experts so it was just a personal thing - we didn't want any accidents. If I could do it again, I'd wait until the dogs were at least a year, if not a bit older. Especially because we have had many troubles with poor Shady's knees which our vet said if not only genetic but possibly in part due to an early spaying. But, in speaking with owners of big dogs, they have related that big dogs rarely go through cycles earlier than 9 mo to a year. I know for sure that Leo went through a bit a puberty between 8 and 10 mo because he got quite a strong scent about him and male dogs at the dog park would get fairly agressive with him, with all his male hormones in full swing. Leo is an incredibly healthy and well built, sturdy male who hikes daily in the woods with me for nearly an hour.
