I was just wondering, which would be better, a male or female Bernese puppy? I know these are gentle dogs but I didn't know if one sex was better than the other around small children. Thanks!

To me, male or female does not really matter.
Like all dogs, the male is more independent while the female pays more attention and has a greater devotion for her owner. She is also more gentle. Probably a female one if you need more affection ![]() |

I think a female would be better with small children. You also avoid some of the issues associated with marking territory, prevalent in male dogs!

Thanks! I was leaning more towards a female. I really don't want to have to deal with marking territory issues!

I am leaning toward a female as well because I've always liked the temperament of female dogs more than male ones (although I love all dogs really!). The marking issue really just helps me make this decision though.

Not sure if this is the norm or not.... But Riley has never even tried to "mark" . He doesnt even lift his leg. Maybe "cause " he is so big if he lifted his leg he would fall over! lol We originally were going to get a female, but generally speaking the males get a little bit bigger, so we decided on a baby boy.

I've always preferred female dogs, but maybe that's just because I'm a woman
I really think that they are more gentle and loving than the males, though I am sure that a lot of them break the norm. |

Male or female? Hmm, let me think.
I've owned a lot of dogs before when I was little and by then, it didn't matter whether it be a he or a she. I guess I look at individual characteristics more and not even think whether it is a male or a female. |

I can't say either a male or female is better than the other. Besides the obvious difference, the Males tend to be 10-15 pounds bigger, and the have a more chiseled look to them. Where as the females tend to look more smooth around the face and not so "boxey" like the males. I personally like the males, the bigger the better in my opinion ![]() |

I guess it probably does boil down to personal preferences for a lot of things (like size of the dog). In the end it's not the most important thing to me as the personality of a dog can be great whether male or female.
