Hi,
this is my first Berner, and he is a male, 1 year old. He is 59 cm and has only about 68 lbs. Is he too small? I'm asking this becouse we are thinking of neutering him since he is not big enough for potential breeding, or is he? I know that he might gain some more weight but still... Otherwise, he is healthy and looks very good. Thanks for your opinions. p.s. I live in eastern Europe and I heard that Berners in this region are generelly smaller then those in USA and Western Europe. |

He does seem a little small. Im new to the Bernese world my puppy is only four months old but shes already 40 pounds, so I would think hes a little small since males are suppose to be bigger.

That does seem a tad small. My berner is 9 months old and 65 lbs, and we had him neutered at 4 months. I was told that since his parents were on the smaller side (father: 100 lbs and mother: 90 lbs) his life span might be longer than a larger berner; 10 years instead of 6-8 years, potantially. I would suggest you take the life span issue into consideration before deciding not to breed him. I actually regret fixing mine because there are tons of people who would love a berner but do not want to pay $2,000+ for one...berners are wonderful dogs and I'm sure many people who don't want a 120 lb dog would love a smaller one
