Hiya! We've had our berner puppy, Kaleva, for about two weeks now. The first night we had her we put her in her kennel to sleep. It was pretty traumatic for her and us. She cried and cried. She even messed all over the kennel, which I didn't she would do. Since then we've kept her in the small bathroom adjacent to our bedroom at night. But I'm wondering if I should try putting her in her kennel again? She goes into her kennel sometimes during the day but we haven't tried shutting the door since that first traumatic night. Do you guys use a kennel at night? We still have to get up to let her out twice during the night. How do you get your puppy to go back to sleep again after they have gone outside? When are they able to sleep through the night? I love her but I could really use a solid 8 hours of sleep! ![]() Thanks! We brought Toa home at 8 weeks and were adamant about crate training. He really didn't like it at first either. He whined and whined. As long as you know that her needs have been met- fed, peed, pood-- then she is fine to sit in there and whine it out. Try it in small time frames during the day to get her used to it. Come back when she is quiet and praise her "good girl, quiet" that way she knows what you expect from her, and she will learn the "quiet" command. Toa would whine a little during the night after we let him out to pee-- which was 3 or 4 times a night. We tried water bottles filled with hot tap water and wrapped in a towel. Usually he calmed down much quicker with that comfort. I also put a loud ticking clock next to his kennel. Also, I hid small treats or kibble in his kennel, around the towel wrapped water bottle. That way, he would associate the kennel with yummy surprises. He is only now going in there on command "go to bed" ... up until a couple of weeks ago we had to carry him in there. In my opinion, crate training is the way to go. Our boy is house trained, and sleeping through the night at 13 weeks. Yes he did have a couple of "accidents" in his kennel, but just make sure that it isn't too big for your girl . They should have just enough room to lay down and be able to turn around. That is their den and they are unlikely to mess where they sleep, but sometimes when they are that young and adjusting to a new situation, they just can't hold it. Be consistant! It is so good to be able to know that he is safe and not getting into anything while I am sleeping or not at home. Keep us posted and good luck! |
