Old To kennel or not to kennel

Hiya! We've had our berner puppy, Kaleva, for about two weeks now. The first night we had her we put her in her kennel to sleep. It was pretty traumatic for her and us. She cried and cried. She even messed all over the kennel, which I didn't she would do.

Since then we've kept her in the small bathroom adjacent to our bedroom at night. But I'm wondering if I should try putting her in her kennel again? She goes into her kennel sometimes during the day but we haven't tried shutting the door since that first traumatic night.

Do you guys use a kennel at night? We still have to get up to let her out twice during the night. How do you get your puppy to go back to sleep again after they have gone outside? When are they able to sleep through the night? I love her but I could really use a solid 8 hours of sleep!

Thanks!

Kaleva is too adorable! Sleep? 8 hours? I had to laugh when I read that! Too many memories for me. We joked that we didnt a whole nights sleep until Riley was a year old! Just hang in there, it will get better. We tried the kennel too, and it just didnt work for us. He used it as a "port-a-john" period. So we basically did what you are doing, we blocked off a bathroom with baby gates for him to stay when no one was home, and then as he got bigger/older/house trained, ect we gave him more and more freedom in the house. At night he slept in our room with the rest of the house blocked off. Sometimes I wish that we had worked more with using the kennel, but at the time it was too frustrating and we finally threw in the towel. I have friends that have kennel trained their dog, and it has worked great for them. Maybe because Berners are so sensitive its harder to do it with them. I swear, Riley gets his feelings hurt soooooooo easy. And I am always a "sucker" for it. Even when he was a puppy he was pretty good about waking us up to go out, it's just that after you get up and go outside it's hard to get him calm again and get yourself back into sleep mode. I would always try not to talk to him too much, except to say "good boy" for going potty outside. I dont know..... I wish I had some better advise for you, but it's just really hard to have a puppy. They need a LOT of attention and love. But like I said, just hang in there it will get better and it will be worth it.

Hello! What an adorable baby! I've had my Levi now for about 5weeks, and because I have children, and they have toys all over the house, and my bathroom is very small, I HAD to crate train Levi. The first two nights of putting him in the crate at night...well... i had the same problem. I'd wake up to poo all over, and he'd whine through the night. I was up every couple hours, and was telling my friends that I felt like a newborn mommy again, instead of feeding a baby, I was having to take one out to go potty! I will tell you that I am glad I stuck with it though, and some things that help us with the crate training was... 1st - I'd put the radio on just low enough for Levi to hear (so he didn't feel so alone), then I'd cover the crate with a blanket so he couldn't see the cat at night (which would get him whining and barking), and my sister mentioned to me about getting a Kong toy, stuffing it with a couple treats and only give it to him in his crate, though, he likes the Kong toy and I do let him have it outside the crate, but I have been giving him 1 milkbone dog biscuit every night when I get him in his crate, and for the past 2 nights, he's actually went into the crate all on his own. I also put a few of his stuffed toys, and a nylabone in there with him at night, that way if he does wake up, he's got something to entertain himself with. Hope some of these (or all) helps you out! If you consistently stick with it... it should only take a few days to start working! Good Luck, and keep us posted on how it's going!
Ps... it took a little over a week... but Levi started sleeping throughout the night (unless we were so tired we never heard him...lol), but he still is sleeping, or at least staying quiet through the night!

Hi,
You just need to persevere with crate training. Jasper pretty much potty trained himself which was nice. We take him to a groomer monthly and when she's ready to dry him, he walks right into the kennel for her even with all the dryer noise!!

Thanks for all the great suggestions! Kaleva is gradually working up to spending all night in her kennel (we're up to three hours!). What made the biggest difference was that I bought a smaller kennel. We had a larger adult sized kennel that we put a box in to make it smaller. Apparently that wasn't small enough for her. I went to the store and just bought a cheap smaller (still pretty big) kennel with a divider panel. That made all the difference in the world.

I've also started giving her treats in her kennel. For example when she comes in from going outside I have her go in her kennel and "have a seat" before I give her the treat. It seems to be working really well she just runs in there now.

Also Kaleva loves our box fan. For some reason she is just hot all the time (I live in Minnesota, it is always below 70 in the house). It helps if I put the box fan on medium right up against her kennel when she is in it. I think she hated the kennel because it was so hot. Now she just lays on her back with the fan blowing across her belly.

I think we'll get there... eventually. But now I'm hopeful!

How is she doing with the kennel ?
I have heard that Berners do not like to be away from their Family, crate training indoors where you are doesn't seem to be so much of a problem but away from the house may be why you were experiencing some problems.
Ollie was always trained to sleep downstairs, we had a baby gate up for him so he didn't keep following up and down the stairs and do damage to hips and elbows.
We have no stair gate up now and he very rarely comes up the stairs.

Kaleva spent her first night in the kennel and it was a great success. She slept the whole night! Eight full hours of sleep! We haven't had that since we got her!

We put the kennel close to our bedroom so she could still see us and she just zonked right out. I think that is pretty good at 3 months.

Thats great news, sleepless nights are not good.
Think I thought you meant an outside kennel, and that was why I was thinbking she would not be happy.
We call indoor kennels crates in the UK. Ollie has a soft one but doesn't use it.

Hi All, hopefully this forum will be a great source for quick answers to questions. There is only so much information you can find in books. We have had Turbo for only a few days now and we seem to be losing faith in the Crate we have for Turbo. He just doesnt like it. The first night he just whined too much and we took him out and he slept almost with no problem right outside the kennel. My main question is, this is okay isnt it? The kennel is in our bedroom and he seems content just lying on the cold floor outside the kennel. Any tricks to get him to enjoy the kennel more?? We need to start using it for work schedules and want to keep him safe and secure. Thanks in advance, Mike
