Old Losing Puppy Fur

My 15 week old puppy's fur seems to be changing on his back by his tail. I'm not sure if he is losing his "puppy fur" and getting in big boy fur or not. It seems to be shorter, heavier and wavier. He has been shedding in clumps and itching lately. When we last had him at the vet we hadnt noticed this change but he was itchy and the vet suggested that the air in our house might be try and we should put him on fatty acids. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me when Berners lose their "puppy fur", I'm not sure if I should be worried about the hair loss and change. ? Thanks!

This is adult coat coming in so not to worry - at 4 months the adult hair begins coming in down the spine and tail as the puppy fur blows (sheds). A heavy coat blow should be expected twice per year.

You will see a tight, seemingly wrapped tail for several months before the tail unfurls.

If the coat or skin is dry - or depending on what you are feeding - then fish oil is definitely a good addition to the diet. Do NOT feed animal fish oil however as you want to ensure that any fish oil consumed by pet or human is regulated and purity tested - those sold on the market for animals are not at all and likely carry toxic heavy metals. As for human fish oils, pharmaceutical grade is the only tested level deemed truly pure and safe and I recommend Carlson's or Natural Factors brands for optimal levels.

Thanks for reassuring us on his coat change. We will look for the fish oils at the store this week. I look forward to learning more from the site!
