Old Not wanting to walk all of a sudden
Junior Member
My 3 and a half month old Norman suddenly doesn't want to go walking, last week he would go out walking fine and now out of no where he just sits and refuses to walk. He whines and grabs the leash and tries to pull me back home. But he is full of energy, when we get back home he runs around like a little terror because he hasn't gotten his energy out. Any idea what would cause this sudden turn of behavior?

lol, we call storm, norman as well. it sure suits him.

I found with storm that he was anxious of different places. very timid. I took him everywhere and people flocked to him. that helped him a huge amount.

This could just be behavioural as Berners can be quite stubborn but it might be worth getting Norman checked out by a vet in case there are any joint problems even if there's nothing obvious.

Ollie did this when he was about 4 months old - he would sit down on walks and then when he got home he would run around the garden like there was nothing wrong! We naturally assumed it was just behavioural as there was no obvious signs of pain etc.

Ollie was eventually diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia in January and our orthopaedic surgeon said his earlier reluctance to exercise was almost certainly because he was in pain even though it wasn't obvious. Although he was happy to run around the garden, the surgeon said Ollie had control over this and could stop when he was sore whereas a walk on the lead meant he couldn't control the distance so was something he had no control over and would explain why he kept sitting down on walks.

Ollie has had a total hip replacement and is now waiting to get the second hip done as he's in a pretty bad way. Hopefully after this surgery he'll be able to enjoy his walks again - can't wait!

Of course Norman's reluctance to walk may just be a behaviour problem and just a phase but to be on the safe side it might be advisable to have him checked over. Good luck!

I agree with this. storm didn't run as a puppy and had elbow dysplsia. he to is no good on a lead. he has a special walk and can't do it on a lead.

the vet told me that when your puppy sits they are tired. I don't force him, just give him a break.
