How long before I can expect my male Berner pup to be house broken? He is a little over 4 months and RARELY has poop accidents. HOWEVER he just hasn't got the pee thing down. He"ll even pee in his crate. We have taken to restricting his water intake with our vet watching over that but i HATE to do that. I take him out ALL the time but refuse to get up in the middle of the night to let him out. I will NOT let him get in that pattern as I'd rather clean up pee in the morning than get up at 3am because he's whining. I stop his water intake after 8 pm and take him out at least 3 times after that before I go to bed. This dog will go outside, pee, get HIGH praise from me or my son along with a treat, then come inside and pee on the kitchen floor 3 minutes later!!
PEACE Peewee

I hated getting up with Storm in the middle of the night. I too did not want this to become a habit. Your puppy is 4 months old, he can not go longer then 4-5 hrs max. his bladder is tiny, he can't hold it that long.
storm eventually started to sleep through the night, with out the habit. he hates getting up at night as well. |

I think your problem is that you let the puppy go to the bathroom in his crate in the middle of the night so he thinks he should always. If I were you I would get up in the middle of the night or when he starts crying. When he gets bigger and can go all night he will learn he doesn't get taken outside at 3 am.
Have you tried training with a bell on the door? Hit the bell with the puppy's foot or nose when you take him out to go to the bathroom. He should learn this in no time and let you know when he needs to go outside. It worked for us in a matter of two weeks. |
