Hi all!

Our puppy is getting spayed tomarrow, and since she's our first dog, I was wondering if anyone had any advice or stories (ie how to keep her from breaking stitches, any foods or activities that will help, etc.) to help calm the nerves.

All our cats have been females, so we are pretty familiar with the spaying routine but a dog is a whole new ball game!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

(Apologies if there's already a thread on this)

Hi,
I have a 6 month old Berner named Cooper. All I can say is try to not have them jump around and make sure they don't lick the wound or pull at the stitches! I'm sure everything with be ok!

Hi there

Just wondered how you got on getting your puppy spayed? We're hoping to get our Berner spayed in the New Year and as she's our first bitch (have always had dogs before), would be keen to hear any tips!

Thanks

Well our Heidi is home now and doing great

No real change in her habits or behaviour at all....still our happy go-lucky girl!

Our vet said she can't off leash play for 7-10 days and to keep her incision site clean and dry. It looks great, no swelling or severe redness which we're very happy about. Heidi sometimes has an urge to lick, but for the most part when we say NO she'll look at us with her big brown eyes and leave it alone We are also very happy that she has dissovable stitches!

Now we're just tyring to keep her as quiet as possible.....a real challenge though since all she wants to do is play. Seeing the fresh snow outside is making her crazy, so fingers crossed she'll be out there again soon lol.

Good luck to all pups being fixed in the New Year!

Glad to hear everything went well. 7-10 days is a long time when all they want to do is play! We have been through it. You can only do so much. It seemed like the more we tried to keep Riley calm, the crazier he got ! Good luck and keep us posted.....

Hi,
I haven't had my Berner fixed yet but I have had my two Keeshonds fixed. They were in pain because they wouldn't sit still and so I ended up getting pain mess from the vet. Berners are different though, my guy is a big couch potato. My breeder wants us to wait for around 18 months or longer to have him fixed.Let us know how everything is going!

Thanks! That's great it all went so well and Heidi seems none the worse. It must be a bit of a nightmare trying to keep her quiet, especially with lots of snow to play in!

Daisy is in season just now so the vet said we need to wait a couple of months after the season finishes before we can get her spayed but we will definitely be getting it done. Our male Berner Ollie was neutered at 6 months but it does seem to be a much bigger operation for females.
