So I have a 7 month old Berner (my first Berner and I've posted a few times about him here already)! My husband and I were planning to get pregnant in a year or so, but we're thinking of trying sooner! I wanted Loki to be a bit older before I had a baby, so I'm nervous of having one before he's even 18 months. Anyone have any advice or experiences to help me?

Hi, my husband and I got our first Berner Brodie just after we got married and our eldest son was born when Brodie was 16 months old. We were a bit worried how he would be with the new baby but he was brilliant, very gentle and protective. We were quite careful at first not to leave him alone with the baby but we needn't have worried.
Our younger son was born a couple of years later and again Brodie was fine and was very patient with the boys even through their toddler years! We sadly lost Brodie last year to cancer but we have 2 new Berners and they are also great with the boys who are now 9 and 7. From our experience we've found Berners are fantastic family dogs and just love being part of family life. They want to get involved in everything! Hope that's of some help and good luck! |

Hi, I just thought I would reply to this post eventhough it doesn't really apply in my situation. Mine is the opposite. My kids, now 23 and 20 are still living at home but thank goodness are calm and know how to treat dogs. My issue is that I want to socialize this pup to children so he won't be nervous around small kids. Everyone I talk to has told me how wonderful they are with children so I'll be looking for small kids to introduce to him. Good luck to those of you with small children and enjoy them. They grow up so fast. |
