Hello Friends, Some of you know that I am active in a Pet Therapy group. We visit nursing homes & also a school with disabled children. I recently was advised that the Canine Influenza vaccine should be given to my dogs. I know the places I go for therapy can carry the flu virus but I then assume they can also get it at the vets office, parks, and pretty much anywhere since the flu is an airborn virus. I dont know, Im torn on this one and was wondering what some of your thoughts were on it. Does anybody know of anyone whos dog ever contracted influenza/flu? If so how bad was it? I just dont like to add anything to my dogs systems that isnt absolutely neccesary. |

Sorry, I don't know someone. Maybe I'll ask my friends if they know someone. If I were you better go for the vet.

I know what you mean about not wanting to give them anything they don't really need...Riley has an immune disorder so he ONLY gets rabies vaccinations. And I wouldn't give that if we didn't have to.

Hello,
I actualy was able to speak to our vet about this. His thoughts are that, if I had a young puppy or a elderly dog then it would be an OK idea to give the vaccine IF they were going to be boarded somewhere. He feels that just like us humans the average dog can fight the flu bug off. Why subject the animal to anything that is not absolutely needed. I agree and will follow his advise. It seems there has been quite a bit of media attention to the subject of canine influenza recently. The news is reporting that there have been reported cases in NY & NJ. |

You got great vet advice - refreshing to see!
This vaccine is extremely limited - just as the Bordatella vaccine is as well and pretty worthless. Bordatella only covers 4 strains of kennel cough out of over 100, and the canine influenza vaccine is also a guessing game. Canine influenza is very rare compared to human flus and consider our own flu shots and how limited they are - each year experts are guessing at the flu strain to include in a given vaccine - and I am always amazed at how many people go along with injecting this stuff into their bodies, instead of just boosting their immune systems and working to prevent the active flu in the first place. This is always the best course with your immune deficient Berners - boost their immune systems rather than assaulting them! Good luck with therapy - a great thing to offer! |

Chlorella and Spirulina fed for 3-5 days once per month Ester C during times of illness, stress, or concerns of flu - feed for 1 week max. Echinacea can be fed for 3 days max Olive Leaf and Pau D'Arco always kept on hand - anti viral, anti fungal, and anti bacterial so great herbs to feed when needed. Always feed with food to avoid upsetting stomach. I am a big user of herbs so use a variety of them for various needs and situations - too much to go into here however. |
