I am picking up my Bernese baby (Scout) on June 27th and am very excited! So nice to find a forum w/ other Berner lovers! I've been trying to make a puppy checklist of all the items I need - so if any of you have any ideas/suggestions, please share with me! Thank you! Also, I'm going to be introducing her to my cat (who loves dogs) so any suggestions on how this should be handled from someone who's been there would be great! Thank you!!! |

Wow - a new Berner puppy - what could be better? I LOVE her name! My only advice is to love and spoil her in a good way i.e. anything you don't want a 90 pound dog doing, don't let a puppy do. (teach her "sit" asap - it's no fun having a huge dog jumping up for attention and she'll be about 70 pounds by 7 months.) We did crate training for all our dogs and believe it's the only way -a quick way to housebreak and train the pup to settle down and relax. We gave treats for "hurry up and pee" and to this day, our dogs will pee when we say this. Nice when we have to go on a road trip and need them to "hurry up". Take her out as much as you can safely for socialization as many Berners are notoriously shy. I think a good puppy kindergarten where all other pups are immunized is OK or socialization with other immunized dogs but don't let her out in public areas until she gets her 3 mo shots. Don't walk her too much as a puppy, (can lead to joint problems if walked too much) read any forums you can on Berner puppy health and for goodness sake, enjoy every moment because all too soon she'll be a fully grown dog (which, is a really GOOD thing!! trust me!) Good luck and keep posting any questions and us Berner owners will be happy to give you lots of advice! IMO, you have entered a world of untold happiness and fullfillment. Bernese are the best of the best of dogs.

great advice! I have to say I'm saddened that I didn't enjoy my girl in the first 7 months
she was just so hyper and mouthy! but I was and am always thankful she is so friendly and loves other dogs EXTREMELY. She is shaping into a terrific dog the past couple of months and I'm sure she will keep getting better and better. I couldn't imagine my life without her now |
