Hi fellow berner lovers!
After 10+ years of admiring the breed, we finally were able to adopt our bundle of joy this July. Heidi is now 8 months old and although the testing teenager stage is challenging, we are thoroughly enjoying our baby! We finally got our first significant snowfall here in Southern Ontario, and boy was it hillarious to watch a Berner in the snow....I cannot believe we waited this long to get one. Looking forward to talking to fellow owners, as this not only is our first berner, but our first dog as well (as a family). All the best Lindsay H ![]() |

Welcome to Bernertalk! Your first dog? and a Bernese? You made a great choice. (thats my opinion any way) They are unlike any other dog I have ever had or met.
The teenage years are trying..lol but you will get through them and it will all be worth it. Would love to see some pics.. ![]() Again welcome to the group!

Welcome - we are new to this board and new Berner owners too - ours is Bear and he just turned 2. We've had him 3.5 weeks and it's like he's lived with us forever.
It's nice to have so many other new owners here too! |

Omg she's so cute! She looks just like my Cooper! We had alot of snow here in RI and I took Cooper out! It was hysterical seeing him bound through 2 feet of snow!!! I have to post pics!! Btw, what do you feed her?

Heidi is gorgeous! Brings back so many memories. I love your photos, with her fuzzy, puppy fur and all! Our girl Shady was a real bad- girl puppy, but, boy-oh-boy, has she ever matured into the most wonderful adult dog ever. So, if Heidi is a brat, remember my words! The training you do will pay off 10-fold in future, so keep it up. Looking forward to reading your future posts!

Haha, 2 ft. of snow eh? Our few centimeters here seems very small compared to that! Heidi is obsessed with catching snowflakes in the air and playing hockey with pieces of ice. My particular favorite is that she puts her head down, opens her mouth and runs so that shes gets a lot of snow on her tongue (she used to do that as a baby with the morning dew ) As for her food, I know its a very personal and objective subject. Our breeder/Berner rescue feeds her dogs Royal Canin so that is what we have continued with Heidi. She also gets on a daily basis carrots, apples, cheese, cottage cheese, blueberries, pear and/or yogurt on her food as well. Every morning she also gets a small spoonful of flaxseed oil (it does wonders for her coat!!). I came accross a great food grading system on another forum which I found really helpful. Wileys great list of grading foods scroll down a bit and you'll see. I know many people who are more natural with their diet (ie BARF) but this seems to work for us. Hopefully we can keep our pup as happy and healthy as possible. Happy holidays to you and Cooper! ![]() |

THanks for the link! The entire food issue is driving me crazy. I want to make sure I feed him the best food and it seems like every other day something new comes out. We first had him on Wolf Cub by Solid Gold then we switched to wellness for large breed puppy and he waS doing great. Now we have to switch him to adult food and my issue is that the wellness puppy and wellness adult are virtually the same food. The adult has 1% less
protein and fat then the puppy version so I'm thinking do I find something with a bit more difference in protein? The solid gold adult food has about 22% protein and 9% fat compared to their puppy food which has 26% protein, 12% fat! I have no idea what to do! I was told to leave him on the Wellness but is that too much protein???? Arghh!!!! Thanks so much for all the imput! Happy holidays to you guys as well. I'm working on the pictures too! I took some really good ones and trying to decide which to use! |
