Hi everyone. I am hoping to become a first time Berner owner in a couple weeks (if it all works out) and am looking for any advice. The breeder recommends using Eukanuba Large Breed puppy food. Has anyone used that and if so, is it good? Thanks!

I haven't tried the Eukanuba, but this website was really helpful for us:

Congratulations! Are you getting a male or a female? Any names picked out yet? As far as the food, our breeder recommended we choose one with a protein level under 25 - 26%. She said that would help maintain his joints best. Good Luck! Can't wait to see pictures of your "little" one! Teresa |

Teresa I found this when we were researching, too - a lot of large breed research we found recommended bypassing puppy food altogether, because the protein levels were too high. |

Hello!
Congratulations on your new puppy, your in for a lot of fun. When choosing a food for my Diesel I went to the dog food analysis website, mentioned here already, and narrowed my choice to about 3 different brands. Based on what I've read and what my breeder's told me, he needed a low protein, low fat content food to ensure slow steady growth which prevents joint problems. Once he gets to be about 8months to a year he can be put on food with a higher protein level. This website has helped me out a lot as well: Bernese Mountain Dog Diet She knows her stuff! Anywho I decided on Canidae: All Life Stages because i've read and heard the most positive things about it and it's not OVERLY expensive. Plus, of course, Diesel loves it! He gobbles down about 1 1/2 cups every meal time and has nice stiff stools. Once he gets older I am going to incorporate a little bit of RAW feeding to his diet. It's all up to you what you want to feed him but some good advice I was given is "feed the best you can afford". Good luck and look forward to seeing some pictures. |
