Well, Hello everyone!

I have just been put on a waiting list to get myself a beautiful bernese mountain dog, and can't wait to get my hands on my puppy!

I am currently debating a male or a female puppy, but have managed to actually have a list of names for both!

I guess my current question for all the berner owners out there is... female or male? What exactly is the main personality difference?

Also, any advice on what to buy before bringing my puppy home would be fantastic.

Hi Ana,

First off.....Congrats, they are awesome dogs!

We started with a female and she is such a sweetheart. Having said that..... we now have 2 boys as well and i honestly don't think you can go wrong whether you choose a boy or a girl. I know thats not alot of help but its true.

btw....where are you getting your Berner from? Just curious as all of ours came from Red Deer, AB

Thanks!

I'm getting mine from a breeder in Red Deer as well. Heaven on Earth kennels I believe it's called.

I am sooo excited to get my puppy. I think I'm going to go for a boy, I've only had experience with female dogs in the past and since this is the first dog I'll be owning and raising all by myself, might as well make everything a new experience right?

Heaven on earth is where our girl came from....she's great, as is her daughter (wild west bernese). Our boys came from her.

Welcome!

We were actually all set to get a girl, but when we went to the breeder the only girl pup left was really hyper and wriggled and whined through the flip-the-puppy-on-its-back test LOL When we picked up Barney and put him on his back, he stared at me for about 2 seconds and then fell asleep

So for what it's worth, try to look at personality and energy level rather than male/female. It's helped us

Hi! Congrats on your upcoming addition!

As far as male/female --- I was "certain" I wanted a female. We have a male & female cocker spaniel at home, and the male can be a little territorial, while my female is just ball-crazy; both are sweet.

However, when we met the puppies, I fell completely in love with a male. It seemed he chose us as well. He kept coming up and leaning against my legs or laying at my feet while his siblings played and looked for attention from the breeder. And as someone else said, the girls in this litter were a little more dominant and demanding, not to mention active.

We were hooked, and a week later, brought our Sam home. Things are going well, and Sam is Oh So Sweet! We definitely made the right choice.

Can't wait to see pictures of your little one!
