I was very pleased to see this forum on the interwebs. I immediately added myself and here we are.

Tonka is my 8 week old Berner. Adore her to death. I am still surprised at how alert and well she reacts to the basics like, Come, Potties and Sit. Those are the only ones I am working on keeping engrained till she is a fair bit older.

I've posted some pictures from the week and weekend with of course more to come.

Just wanted to say hi to everyone and I look forward to sharing and learning from everyone.

Side note...This is my first dog, I've been told that I'm a, "Go Big or Go Home" person. I suppose a BerneseMD was the only way for me then. I did a ton of research and know she is the best edition to my life that I could have chosen.

One day I will write down the story of why we call her the Karma dog.

Welcome to the site. And Congrats on not just your first puppy, but a Berner on top of that ! She is precious! You are going to be amazed over and over again at how smart she really is. You also have a LOT of puppy stuff to go through! There is tons of good info on here, so just look around and feel free to ask if you don't see what you need.

And yes.... now you have to tell us the Karma Dog story!

Old Karma - The Links and Cycle of the Tonks Arrival

Here goes nothin! I type fast and talk too much at times so I am sure will be a TON of rambling below.

My house consists of myself, Mitch and Marc. We have all been friends for 3 years, myself being the newbie. Marc and Mitch have been friends since they were toddling.

*Background as to why this is all starts to fall into place. Marc and myself are AVID INSANE Chicago Bears fans. Mitch is a Firefighter Paramedic. I'm Amanda *

After living together for the past few years we started discussing a dog. I was the chink in the chain for them because of how unsure I was, never having a dog before. This past summer I went camping and actually paid attention to the dogs and their owners. Having a blast. Being an avid camper and hiker. I thought more about it. Then Mitch relayed to me, "Manda, I have always wanted a Bernese Mountain Dog. Since I worked with them when I was younger. Do me a favor. Go online, research your butt off like you always do and tell me if you think it will be a good fit for our house." I went to the interwebs and started my quest of BMD research.

About 3 months and 20 breeders later I found 2 breeders that seemed a perfect fit for the environment that I would like a puppy to come from. I wrote them introductory letters and waited for responses. The first one...The woman replied with pictures of the puppies already in kennels(6 weeks at that time old) and also told me that they were already used to their kennels as she has been raising them in a large garage and had never been outside yet. She also told me that this would make it a better "house" dog. I replied nicely, that I will have a puppy that will be outside playing in the sun and not locked indoors at all times as her letter quite clearly detailed was her choice as a "show dog trainer" and "breeder". Discouraged from that response I received the second reply. This time from Heather. She wrote back a lovely letter and relayed that we seemed a great fit and how much she appreciated a letter about where the pup would be living etc.
I spoke with the roomies and we all decided that we would go to see Heathers home and puppies that weekend.

We make the 5.5 hour drive to Iowa to see the pups. The pups we were interested in were the two females about 7/8 weeks. As we came closer to her town, I called to get her exact address.
Her address was on Amanda Street...
"Yep, my name is Amanda, but what street do you live on?"
Amanda Street. Haha
As we pulled up to their home on Amanda Street in Iowa we saw Chicago Bears emblems on the vehicles, a flag on the front pole and more. Yeah...Karma already starting the cycle...
Tonk ran up to me first, then Mitch and then Marc. The other little pup was lovely but did not have the "tree trunks" that Tonka does. I melted. We played and chatted with Heather and her husband and daughter. Lovely conversation etc. Met the mom and dad of Tonka and some other dogs they have. When I went to sign the paperwork Heather expressed that if we Ever think that we cannot handle, work with, come into a change in life etc that she will without question take Tonka(Opal at that time) back. I thought this was lovely and relayed that if she was ever not to be a part of our home that she would be our first call. I signed the papers we said our goodbyes and began the ride home.

At 7 weeks and 3 days old this little darling whined when she needed us to pull over to potty. Long drive with a small puppy bladder but she told us every time.

We arrived home and she has been a doll since.

Over the weekend I finalized which vet I picked out our large abundance of them here in northern IL. I told the lads which one I picked and the firefighter paramedic Mitch said, that is the place where the main vet is making the prototype for us to use on fire calls to save dogs and cats. It's a breathing attachment where if they cannot find a human they use what he is making to attach to the dog/cats face to stop the smoke inhalation while being carried out. I being the ever curious researcher went online to their site and sure as sh#t...it was Dr Nick. The first dog on the flash screen was also a Berner adult...So as far as my decision to be a dog owner goes...

I'm hooked. The street, Da Bears and the firefighting vet just linked us all perfectly together.

And so is the beginning of Tonka Time.

PS - Yes...Manda, Marc and Tonka were all yelling at the Bears last night. This is her relaxing after all that excitement.
